Twas the Night Before the Night Before Christmas

... And if you haven't picked up your copy of The Night Before Christmas, you better go get it.

Also, for all the kids out there, you're going to want to keep track of Santa here. And to stay on his "good list," here are some Christmas cookie recipes.

Wishing everyone a very merry Christmas!

Agent Turnberry: Bear About Town and Attendee of Children's Aid Foundation Celebration

Agent Turnberry is a real cool cat (he's got a lot of this, and he's got a lot of that). This past Sunday he stopped by the Children's Aid Foundation's 31st Annual Holiday Season Celebration, which is a fabulously festive party that spreads holiday cheer to hundreds of children in the care of child welfare services in the Toronto area and their families. Of course, he was delighted to attend such a worthwhile event, and we've just gotten word that he was an (almost) perfect gentleman at the affair.

"He was very well behaved and really brought smiles to the faces of all the children at the party! ... We had a hard time keeping him away from the blue raspberry lollipops, but never the less he is welcome back anytime!"

What can we say? He loves those darn blue raspberry lollipops!

Lug Gets Fit for New Years

We're halfway through December (man, time flies!), which means it's about time to start thinking about those New Year's resolutions. And why not get a jump on it? We did! The whole Lug gang (only partially pictured) took a trip to two of our favorite local running shops—Running Free in Markham and Luke's Locker in Dallas—to get foot assessments and stock up on new kicks for the new year. Looks like there are going to be lots of happy feet running around the Lug offices!

What will your New Year's resolution be?

Lots of Lug Love!

Still got some holiday gift shopping to take care of? The Succulent Wife is here to help with gift guides for all kinds, from pets, teens, kiddos, and hostesses to the men and women on your list. And on that Gift Guide for Women is our Nap Sac Travel Blanket and Pillow Set. We couldn't agree with you more, The Succulent Wife. The Nap Sac is a brilliant gift for keeping the women in your life comfortable while they travel.

And here's a little more Lug love from Nate Berkus—this time on his blog. Once again, WE LOVE NATE!

Color Theory Thursday: Notable Navy

I don't think anyone would disagree that the holidays can be hectic. So for this Color Theory Thursday, I thought it smart to review a calming hue like navy blue.

With so much blue all around us in the sky and the sea, it's easy to see why blue is a favorite color for so many. Did you know that the color blue actually causes the body to produce chemicals that are calming? (Learned that right here.) This insight kind of makes you want to paint your house blue for the holidays, right? Or maybe just your bedroom—a calming retreat. Blue also symbolizes trust, wisdom, and stability. Go for navy blue if you're looking for an honorable hue.

Holiday Travel Tunes: Updating Your Travel Playlist

Any lengthy trip requires a host of diversions—books, movies, games, and, of course, music. And it's only natural that holiday travel would require holiday tunes. A little mood music, if you will. Here's a little inspiration to update your playlist:

First is Amazon's list of 25 Essential Holiday Albums. Lots of classics on this list, plus a little something from a range of genres—jazz, country/bluegrass, rock, soul.

But as I looked through the Amazon list, I realized that there was no Mariah. *gasp* It's just not Christmas without Mariah Carey. She's put out many since this album, but the original Merry Christmas is hard to beat.

Of course, there's Josh Groban and Michael Buble for great male leads, and Susan Boyle and adorable little Jackie Evancho, two amazing voices to come out of talent competitions.

Then, during my research, I came across this NPR story: The Best, Worst and Weirdest in Holiday CDs. And that is what I will leave you with. Happy listening!

Lug Makes The Nate Show with Nate Berkus

We LOVE Nate Berkus, and he showed Lug some love on his show! Our bags were featured on The Nate Show this week during a segment about holiday travel. Here's what Nate's guest, travel expert Kendra Thornton, had to say about the Lug Shuttle Bus.

Lightweight bags are the key. The lighter the actual bag that you are going to carry on, the easier it will be for you to use the bag. Don't go above 5 pounds with a duffel bag style carry on, and with a wheeled suitcase, keep it under 12 pounds. If you're in the market for a new lightweight carry-on travel bag, check out the Lug Round-Trip Shuttle Bus Weekend Bag (pictured above). It's cute, functional, easy to carry, and the multiple compartments will help keep you organized.

Happy audience members walked away with a Lug bag and some accessories. We are so glad to have been a part of the show!

Ready for the Biggest Travel Day of the Year?

The day before Thanksgiving is the biggest travel day of the year. Are you ready? I am, and here's why. I've got my Tuk Tuk Carryall packed with all my carry-on items: computer, book, snacks, Nap-Sac. I've got my checked bag belted and tagged, and I've even used a little Clearview Envelope to store lip gloss and other liquids that will have to go through security. And for all the Black Friday sales, I'm packing my Eco Shopper. I'm all Lugged out and ready go. Hope you are too! Happy travels and an even happier Thanksgiving to you!

One Week To Go!

You may think I'm talking about Thanksgiving, which, of course, is exactly one week from today. But I'm not. No, I'm talking about the deadline to enter this month's contest for LUG FAN OF THE MONTH, which is also exactly one week from today. Each and every month, Lug scours submissions and chooses one lucky Lug fan, who wins all kinds of Lug loot. And each and every month, the deadline to enter is the 25th. Christine Rivard was our September fan, and our October fan will be revealed later this month. Will you be our November fan? ... Not if you don't enter! Luckily, it's easy. Just go here, tell us why you're a big Lug Nut, and include a pic or two.

See. I told you it was easy.

Thanksgiving Travel Tips ... Be Stress Free!

Holiday travel can be stressful. Okay, sure, that could have probably gone unsaid. I mean, with tens of millions planning to hit the road next week for Thanksgiving, there's bound to be plenty of stress to go around. But I've always believed that one key to being stress free is preparation. (See that woman in the picture over there to the left? She prepared.) So, I've scoured the web to find some sites with varied travel tips: First, here are some air travel tips. And here's a whole site dedicated to traveling with kids. Here are some driving tips. And for good measure, here are some tips for those who are stressed just from the thought of holiday travel and have convinced loved ones to travel to them.
Of course, the biggest preparation tip of all is to carry smart bags and travel accessories. Pack a Puddle Jumper for an overnight trip or opt for a Shuttle Bus for the weekend. Or there's always the Tuk Tuk or the Taxi or the Moped or ... Well. You get the picture. There's a Lug bag for every possible pilgrimage, plus accessories (like a Nap Sac or a Flatbed or a Tango ...) to ease any travel stresses.
So, be prepared, and you can be just like the woman in the picture. Or at least a little more carefree.

Thank You, Veterans

The month of November is truly a month of giving thanks—not only for friends, family, and the ridiculous portions of turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie to come (yum), but also, as today reminds us, November 11 is the special day of remembrance to give thanks for our Veterans and "honor their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good." (I picked up that last part right here.) So, go out there and hug a veteran. Or throw up a high-five. Or maybe just a simple smile and "Thanks" will do.

Lug Retailer Gets Some Love!

We are happy to announce that one of our fantastic Lug retailers has just won "Best Unique Gift Store" in Toronto. Here's a clip:
With its quirky selection of home accessories, gadgets and toys, Yorkville's Rolo often takes the best gift shop prize. What's new this year is its amazing web boutique, where it's doing brisk business in voodoo doll pen holders, LUG cosmetic cases and digital wine thermometers.
We too love your quirky style, Rolo. Congrats on the win!

Lug Sponsors the Teddy Bear Affair

Could there be a cuter children's charity event name than the Teddy Bear Affair? Answer: No. But more than a cute name, this black-tie gala benefits the Children's Aid Foundation, an organization that "works to provide funding for prevention, enrichment, and education programs" for at-risk children and youth. Lug is proud to be the main sponsor of the VIP section for this Nov. 6 event.

Pictured: Our Undercover Bears. Just as cute as teddy bears and arguably more cuddly.

Color Theory Thursday: Orange

Fall is in the air, and with fall comes a cornucopia of color—reds, yellows, browns, and, of course, ORANGE! Here are some interesting tidbits about the color orange.

With the energy of red and the happiness of yellow, orange is an invigorating mix that represents happiness, creativity, and enthusiasm. Per this site, "Orange increases oxygen supply to the brain, produces an invigorating effect, and stimulates mental activity." Hmm. Maybe I'll paint my office orange.

P.S. Don't forget to pick up your Eco-Shopper (pictured) for trick-or-treating!

Lug Sponsors Human Race Benefit

On October 15-16, Lug was a proud sponsor of a Toronto event called the Human Race, which benefitted the North York General Hospital. This huge hospital sees more than 100,000 patients a year, has the second busiest emergency center in the greater Toronto area, and delivers more than 5,800 babies each year (that's a lot of diapers)! Teams scored a custom Lug bag (pictured) to take on their "FUN-draising adventure," and we were happy to support such a great cause!

Ready for All Hallows' Eve?

In just over a week, trick-or-treaters hit the street. Are you ready for the festivities? If no, you've got all weekend to get your ghoul on.

We're loving the ideas found at HGTV.com and FamilyFun.com. But however you decorate and whatever you wear, arguably the most important aspect of the Halloween tradition is locating the perfect trick-or-treating bag. Because, as we know, tricks are fun, but treats are YUM! Your kids will want an extra-large bag—big enough to collect their loot, plus a little for you too (of course). Enter the Eco-Shopper Foldable Tote, in what else but Sunset Orange. It's light-weight and easy to carry—perfect for running door-to-door. So, head to your local Lug retailer to snap one up, and have a happy Halloween!

Looking Good, Feeling Good

We all know that when you look good, you feel good. That's why we're dedicating this post to some of the great new Lug products that help you help yourself. First, we've got three new cosmetic cases in varying sizes that make it easy for the girl on the go to glam up. So, from largest to smallest, check out the Tumbler Cosmetic Clam, the Parasail Ripple Cosmetic Case (pictured, pink), and the Punter Zip Pouch. Whether you've got a lot or a little to tow, you're covered.

Next, the perfect companion to all our cosmetic cases, the Canoe Brush Holder. It neatly stores all your makeup brushes so all your tools are at hand and organized.

And finally, to the crowing glory—the ever-important hair-do (as opposed to the much-loathed hair-don't). Check out our Clipper Flatiron Case (pictured, green). It smartly stows hot flat irons and curling irons so you won't waist valuable time waiting for your iron to cool.

Looking good on the go is more convenient than ever, which means that feeling good is inevitable!

Lug Love Galore!

We're happy to announce lots of Lug love across the inter-webs today. First up is Blisstree's list of gym bags that don't suck, in which the fabulous Puddle Jumper is featured.
"If you're stuck carrying a bunch of gear, Lug's Puddle Jumper bag can stand up to the task. ... Plus, it's big enough to use for weekend trips. That's a lot of bang for your buck."
Thanks, Blisstree! We agree!

Second is a little love from L.A. Parent, just in time for the cooler fall weather. They've featured our cuddly Undercover Bears, saying "we're ready to hibernate now!"

Of course, with an Undercover Bear by your side, you're always at the ready for a cozy, comfortable snooze!

We love the love!

Lug Nut Alert!

This Lug Nut was spotted on the campus of the University of Oklahoma looking mighty cute with her Gondola Slouch Tote in Rose Pink. She recently went back to school to study a new language and needed a stylish book bag that didn't scream "student." As she says, "I get comments all the time about my bag, and I love to tell everyone about my love for Lug!"

Thanks, Lug Nut!

And to all you other Lug Nuts out there, we love to see the Lug love in action. Send us pics of you using your Lug gear, and we may post you as the next veritable Lug Nug.

Color Theory Thursday: Gorgeous Green

Did you that green is the most restful color to the human eye? Or that it has healing power and can improve vision? Says so right here. As I'm sure you all know from elementary art class, the combination of blue and yellow makes green, and that's why green can either have a warming or a cooling effect (lots of yellow, warm; lots of blue, cool). To make your green pop, try pairing it with purple for a lively contrast.

It can be hard to choose from the Lug color collection, but go with green for growth and good fortune.

This Friday and Saturday, the Rally for Kids with Cancer is racing around Toronto, and the Lug Undercover Bears will be manning a pit stop! It's always good to have a member of this furry force on your side, right? Plus, participants will walk away with one of our new Pedals Lunch Totes and custom "Rally" luggage tags (pictured).

If you've never heard about the Rally, it's the ultimate event for those who love exotic cars and celebrity sightings. And it's all about raising money for cancer research. A great event for a great cause. Go here for all the info you would ever need.

Remember: This is the event where thinking fast, not driving fast, gets you across the finish line.

Traveler's Check: Cargo A-Go-Go

A great big duffel is great for stuffing, but when organization is in order, more petite pouches do the trick. Enter the Cargo 3-piece Packing Squares, our smart new packing accessories. They come in a three-piece set—small, medium, and large—so whatever you're packing, there's no problem. Plus, they fold up into tiny pouches, taking up almost no room when you don't need them. Now, tell me, what's not to love about these packing squares?

Color Theory Thursday: Purple

Another installation of Color Theory Thursday is brought to you by the color purple. If this hue is for you, read more and learn what it says about you!

PURPLE
This color is associated with wisdom, creativity, and mystery, not to mention royalty. It evokes power, luxury, and nobility. And did you know that "almost 75 percent of pre-adolescent children prefer purple to all other colors?" Good to know when choosing treats for tykes. Wear it with green for contrast or blue for harmony.

Labor Day by Lug

This Labor Day weekend, I took a trip to N'awlins—the Big Easy, the Crescent City, the birthplace of jazz—and, boy, was it fun. I could tell you about the food I ate (yum!), sites I saw (awesome history), music I danced to (thank goodness there is no video of my moves), but I'll leave all that to the guide books and give you my trip by Lug!

Lug Stop #1: First, the plane trip. No matter where I'm going, I never leave home without a Nap Sac or Undercover Bear—a travel essential.
Lug Stop #2: I landed and the tacky tourist in me took over. Luckily, I had my Wings Day Bag on hand to stuff my camera, map, guide book, water bottle, sun glasses, etc. All you need is a good bag, and you're set to explore for the day.
Lug Stop #3: Next came shopping mode—gotta have a souvenir (or two or three) to commemorate my trip! I headed out with a cute little purse and my trusty Eco Shopper stashed inside. Its super light weight doesn't weigh you down ... until you fill it with fun finds!

All in all, a great Lug trip. Wonder what I'll take on my next excursion?

Have you used your Lug gear on a recent trip? Tell me all about it in the comments!

Retail Therapy

Though ordering online is always an option, the fun of stopping by a favorite shop, browsing the goods, and chatting with salespeople is undeniable. A little retail therapy can sometimes be just the pick-me-up you're looking for, or as our July fan of the month, Jennifer Bradley, said in a recent blog post, "I realized what would make my day perfect: a new [Lug] bag." So, she stopped by her local shop and picked up the perfect addition to her extensive Lug collection.

Regarding retail, we at Lug were wondering, what's your favorite local Lug store? And why do you love it so? Nominate your favorite store that carries Lug, and we'll pass on the Lug love by listing the shop on our site.

How great is this picture? That's a rhetorical question, but if you need an answer, it's REALLY GREAT! This pic comes to us from an office where there are clearly some Lug Nuts running wild. Looks like they're big fans of the Freight Box Lunch Cube, and we are too. But as I sit here, only an hour before noon, the more important question may be, what's for lunch? *tummy growling*

Lug Love Times Two

We've been getting a lot of Lug love in the past few days, and we love spreading the love right back at ya!

First, thanks Laptop Mag for your awesome coverage of our Echo Laptop Backpack. Per the story:
The Echo isn’t much larger than most backpacks, but the sheer number of storage options, along with solid build quality, makes it a great bag for any situation.
So glad you noticed our supreme attention to organizational excellence, Laptop Mag.

Second, thanks Gadling for your excellent review of our cute and cosy Undercover Bears. Per the story:
Last year, we crowned the Lug SNUZSAC as one of the best travel products of 2009 - and it really is a fantastic travel product, offering a blanket and pillow in a single carry-on. And now the brains behind Lug just announced a kids version of the SNUZSAC ... called Undercover Bears. ... [I]f you pick the purple Undercover Bear, you'll be best friends with Agent Pufferton. This agent enjoys plum pudding and covers you with spirit and hope. How awesome is that?
Pretty awesome, Gadling. Pretty awesome.

Thanks for all the Lug love out there!

Help Your Kid Heart School

Sometimes heading back to school can be a little nerve-wracking for an anxious kiddo. But a little heart—like the Travel Charm, Heart Shape Tag—can go a long way. Just attach the charm to any book bag (like this one, maybe), and each day slip a note of encouragement into the ID pouch. A few words of love and support brighten any day.

The Puddle Jumper: It's Gym Rat-tastic!

That's right. If you're in the market for a great gym bag or a tote to throw your sports gear in, the Puddle Jumper is a perfect fit. First, the size is just right. Not to big and not too small, it'll squeeze into a gym locker but it still has plenty of space for all the essentials, including a change of clothes. Second, there's this smart little ventilated compartment in the back, which stashes shoes or soiled clothes separately from the rest of the stuff in your bag. Third, it's made with water repellant fabric that keeps it looking like new. All in all, this bag is ... well, it's gym rat-tastic!

Thursday, August 5, 2010

Color Theory Thursday: Ravishing Red

If you love Lug, you know we like to "live life in color," and we hope you do too. Color Theory Thursday is where we learn what that hue says about you.

RED
The color of love, passion, strength, and prosperity. It's not a color for wallflowers, that's for sure. It's a bold color, meant to stand out in a crowd. Wear it with pink (pictured) or yellow if it's harmony you're after, or pair it with cool colors, like blue or green, for contrast.

Traveler's Check: The Smart(est) Satchel

Whether you're heading out for a fun weekend excursion to the Taste of Wisconsin (July 30-Aug. 1), for example, or off to Europe to celebrate Contador's Tour de France victory, the Cable Car Satchel is a great grab-and-go bag for any occasion. It safely stores the essentials in organized pockets and zip-pouches, yet leaves plenty of space for souvenirs (like a yellow jersey ... or some cheese).

The Bag You Thought You Knew: Skipper Shoulder Pouch

You know the Skipper Shoulder Pouch? Sure, you do. It's the cute little bag with the adjustable strap that lets you sling it over your shoulder or shorten it like a purse. The one that holds all of the essentials even thought it's a petite pouch.

What you don't know is that this little purse also works as a wallet. Take off the strap, and toss it into any bigger bag. All the essentials are intact!

And that's the the Skipper Shoulder Pouch—the bag you thought you knew!

We posted about Canada and the US, so we certainly didn't want to leave out all our French friends. Hope everyone had a wonderful Bastille Day!

... July is a busy month for national holidays.

The Echo Laptop Backpack: A Smart Lug Bag for Students

If you've walked into any major drugstore or discount retailer recently, you've no doubt been bombarded with back-to-school gear of every sort. Pencils, erasers, highlighters, pens, paper, binders—everything you thought you needed plus more. But all that stuff doesn't scare us. Lug bags are made to keep you organized, and the Echo Laptop Backpack is a perfect example. It's lightweight and has pockets and pouches for everything from those papers and pens to your electronics. While an A+ in astrophysics might be a stretch, you can rest assured your book bag will score top marks.

Beachy Keen: Brilliant Lug Bags for the Beach

It's summertime, which, for many people, also means it beach time. And what word goes with beach? Bag! Also ball, umbrella, and towel, among others. But the bag is clearly the most important. If not for the bag, no other beach necessity would arrive on shore. Luckily, at Lug there are many viable options. Of course, the Gondola Slouch Tote is an obvious choice, with its big belly for beach towels and a book, as well as it's wipeable bottom. Add to that, the Clearview Envelopes, which keep any bigger beach bag tidy and are great for stashing messy sunscreen, and the Freight Box Lunch Cube for snacks. But an unexpected option is the Eco Shopper Foldable Tote, and here's why it's great:
1. It folds into a tiny envelope and takes up less space in a suitcase than that itsy bitsy teeny bikini.
2. It unfolds and easily packs two towels, book/magazine, sunscreen, and any other little beach necessities.
3. It's made of specially treated water repellent material, so it'll look just as good leaving the beach as it did when it got there.
4. You can get it in Ocean Teal (pictured), which just makes sense.

Happy beaching!

Lug + Joe Carter & Friends Golf Tournament = Good Lug-ing

We love spreading the love here at Lug, and that's exactly what we did on June 23 at the first annual Joe Carter and Friends Golf Tournament. (There's lovable Joe, pictured above!) We sponsored the 11th hole, where we hosted a beanie chair toss—a high-skill, high-stakes competition where participants gingerly toss the beanie over their shoulder, trying to land closest to the marker and win. (See P.K. Subban's excellent form.) Winners scored a naturopathic remedy kit (click here if you have no idea what naturopathy is), and we also gave away our beanie chairs, luggage tags and coupons, plus Frommer's laptop sleeves and digital cases. We also custombranded our Shuttle Bus for the tournament and provided it to all the players. It was a great event, with proceeds going to a great cause—the Children's Aid Foundation. We're already counting down for next year's tourney!

Quote of the day comes from Canadian hockey great Rick Vaive, who said, "You gotta Lug life!" We Lug you, Rick Vaive.
